Plastic Waste & Dark Roads
In 2024, plastic bottles piled up on campus, while kids in Daliangshan walked a long way to school without a single streetlight. I just naively thought: it would be nice to give them some light.
Turning Waste into Light
I led a team of 14 to recycle over 100 bottles a month, turning them into 3D-printed eco-lamps. We sold them and used the money to buy headlamps and donated streetlights to the village in Sichuan. Back then, I thought my mission was done. I thought I had lit their main roads and given them light.
A Discovery That Stopped Me
Later, I saw photos from the follow-up visit: the main road was indeed lit by our streetlights, but the headlamps weren't used on the dark walk to school. Instead, they were hung over kitchen stoves for cooking. That's when it hit me: we lit the public road, but what they truly needed was to have their real lives seen. This made me pause and rethink charity. It shouldn't be a handout from above, but empathy from standing in their shoes.
Lighting Up the Future, Not Just the Stove
This became my most profound lesson about "light." I stopped just donating streetlights and tools, and started teaching them to film videos to tell their own stories. Streetlights can illuminate the main road, but only empowerment can truly light up their future.
